February 19th, 2008 New Releases

February 18, 2008

Some great new albums this week. I highly reccomend the Mountain Goats "Heretic Pride" and This is Hell's "Misfortunes."

Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride (CD and LP)
Heretic Pride is a suite of songs about mythical creatures, imaginary cults, slasher films, and pulp fiction novelists. Here, John Darnielle has also come up with some of the most anthemic, impassioned, and downright catchy songs of his career. "It's rare to come across such specific and purposeful prose in modern pop. But alongside Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and the Decemberists' Colin Meloy, John Darnielle is helping bring fine lyric writing back to life." - NY Daily News

This is Hell - Misfortunes (LP available March 4th)
Sophomore full length from Long Island's This is Hell. Emotive, explosive, loud and exciting.

Reign Supreme - American Violence EP
Philadelphia's Reign Supreme, led by former Blacklisted member Jay Pepito on vocals, wield the same devastating musical hammer as bands like Crowbar, Terror, and Integrity, yet come out swinging with a conviction and rage unlike anyone before them. With songs like "Iscariot" and "To A Dead God," they rise up to strike down with a bone shaking violence that few possess, leading the pack while thinning the herd with their unflinching power, confidence, and intensity.

Genghis Tron - Board Up the House (LP forthcoming)
The enigmatic trio known as Genghis Tron weave an ocean sized orchestra from just a few instruments and machines. On their vivid palette of sound and texture, giant riffs and frenetic beats make perfect sense next to haunting vocal melodies and moments of subtle beauty. The band's long awaited Relapse debut spills over with 11 tracks combining the extremes of modern rock music into a totally unique, completely unforgettable experience.

Down to Nothing - Unbreakable (CD and LP)
After being out of print for over a year, Down to Nothing's Splitting Headache and Save It For the Birds are finally available again on one special Revelation release, Unbreakable.

Burn to Shine 5 DVD
Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie brought together 14 of his favorite bands on one day in January 2007 to create a portrait of one of the world's most thriving music scenes. Each band plays one song, with artists including Harvey Danger, Dave Bazan, Ben Gibbard, Eddie Vedder, Minus The Bear, Kinski and more. Unlike other "Burn To Shine" DVDs, this one results in the house merely being saved and recycled rather than destroyed as has been in previous volumes.

The Raveonettes - Lust Lust Lust (CD and LP)
This Danish duo have re-emerged with an album that perfectly distills the band's 60s noir-pop songcraft and fuzz-guitar clamor into a melodic, sensuous voyage through the layers of desire. Showcasing a broader stylistic pallete and a newly cinematic sense of drama, on "Lust Lust Lust", the band retains the unique, compelling combination of sexy pop songs and rock 'n' roll urgency that have made them critics' darlings. Features two North America-only bonus tracks. Vinyl includes a bonus 7-inch and full digital album download. Already dubbed "one of the first great new albums coming out in 2008" - The Tripwire.

KRS-One - Adventures in Emceein
Fresh of his critically acclaimed 2007 collabo with Marley Marl, the teacher is back with his 12th solo album, ADVENTURES IN EMCEEIN'. More of a compilation album of recent material than a new project, ADVENTURES IN EMCEEIN' features 20 never-before-heard tracks recorded between 2004 and 2007. Lyrically, Kris touches on a range of contemporary issues and collaborates with a handful of fellow conscious rappers including Chuck D, Dwayne da Rock, Peedo, S-Five, Non-Stop, and MC Lyte. Nas, Rakim, and Just Blaze also appear on spoken-word interludes to give shouts to the Blast Master. This album is a collection of recent KRS-ONE recordings chosen to show his complete range subject matters. He is not only political, cultural, satirical, philosophical, and introspective with his lyrics but also has a unique flair for poetry and rhyming that no other rapper has ever come close to.

Kingdom of Sorrow - S/T
Boasting a line up that includes members of such infamous metal bands as Hatebreed, Down, Crowbar, and more, the infamous Kingdom of Sorrow has been unveiled. The brainchild of Jamey Jasta and riff master Kirk Windstein, the band tears through an 11 track barrage of some of the most punishing, straight up metal in years.

Dead to Fall - Are You Serious?
Dead to Fall marry modern American heaviness with tasty European theatrical trash. This album from one of the pioneering bands in Swedish metalcore is inspired by the band members' real life experiences.

Arson Anthem - S/T EP
Philip H Anselmo, from Pantera and Down, on guitar. Starved on stale vodka and even staler non filters, basking the telepathic glow of vicious, filthy '80s style hardcore punk and hardcore, this improper organization has finally and ultimately wrecked full on into a barebones and distorted bastard vacuum.

Across Five Aprils - Life Underwater
Life Underwater combines a biting, raw styles of melodic hardcore with a bold, spiteful messge that shungs dogmatic thinking and encourages the listener to take a stand and question authority.

Newly available on vinyl:
Radiohead - In Rainbows back in stock
Juno soundtrack
Weakerthans - Reunion Tour
Vampire Weekend - S/T
