New albums from Atmosphere, Billy Bragg, Flight of the Conchords...
Thanks again to everyone that came out to celebrate Record Store Day with us on Saturday! We had a great time and sold lots of stuff. I hope everyone's enjoying all of their free stuff, I think some of you were able to totally redecorate your homes with the amount of posters available. We really do appreciate all of our loyal customers. As you may have heard, record stores generally aren't doing so well right now and they're closing down all over the country. We're happy to be here and hopefully we'll be holding on for a while. Michigan's economy especially is suffering right now, but I'm glad that everyone is still buying music. Thank you from the bottoms of our hearts.
I'm still in the process of pricing and putting away the boatload of used vinyl we've gotten in recently. New (used) LPs from the Beatles, the Talking Heads, Bowie, AC/DC, Springsteen, Elvis, REM, the Smiths, U2, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Dylan, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, etc etc ETC. We've also gotten a lot of jazz and blues.
Also, this Sunday, the 27th we'll be having a vegan potluck at 6:00 at Homegrown Organic Eatery, between the Open Space and the Inside Out Gallery. Everyone is invited, carnivores and omnivores alike. Please bring a dish to share. If you're not a cook you could bring chips and salsa or juice or something. We just ask that all food is vegan. (If you don't know what that means, just ask!)
ANYWAY, on to this week's releases...
Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons You Paint That Shit GOLD (Deluxe CD and 2xLP)
The prolific duo of Slug and Ant offer their sixth studio album, presenting their storytelling, songwriting, and musicality at its finest. Limited deluxe edition (25,000), packaged as a 40-page gold embossed hard cover book featuring an illustrated children's story written by Slug. Bonus DVD with over an hour of live footage and extras. Produced by Ant (Brother Ali, Felt).
Billy Bragg - Mr. Love and Justice (Deluxe CD)
In his two and a half decades carrying the torch of social justice, Billy Bragg has melded the folksy populism of Woody Guthrie with the anger and indignation of The Clash. Both are perfectly encapsulated on his Anti debut. Despite the intense politics behind his songs, Billy has never lost sight of the power of personal relationships to hold us together and bring about the kind of redemption that outstrips even the greatest political movements. Musically, this record combines the loose, Stonesy groove Bragg found working with Wilco on the "Mermaid Ave." sessions, with the best parts of his punk and music hall roots. On his most mature record to date, the title says it all.
Flight of the Conchords - S/T (CD and LP)
This acclaimed Kiwi novelty band follow the release of their six-track Grammy Award-winning CD EP "The Distant Future" with their full-length debut. Features fully fleshed-out and professionally recorded versions of the duo's concerts and TV favorites. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement's trademark acoustic guitars lead the blitz, backed by a diverse array of instrumentation and production technique. If amazing, delightful, and hilarious is your idea of funny, then prepare for undisappointment. These fifteen songs pay homage to Pet Shop Boys, censorship, Marvin Gaye, sexism, Shabba Ranks, and backhanded compliments.
Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell (CD and LP)
Their 2006 EP, "A Lesson In Crime", elicited rave reviews from everyone. Since then, TPC have been touring virtually nonstop, pausing only to release last year's "Smith" EP and the digital-only single, "Your English Is Good." Now Ontario's favorite sons offer their first full-length. Elephant Shell is the sound of these four early-20-somethings delivering on every bit of promise in their rapid-fire barrage of material to date.
Elvis Costello and the Imposters - Momofuku (LP only - CD on 5/6)
Goldfinger - Hello Destiny
Their sixth full-length in a thirteen-year career. Once again produced by front man John Feldmann, whose production credits also include hits by The Used, Good Charlotte, and Story Of The Year, "Hello Destiny" delivers twelve catchy pop punk songs sure to please Goldfinger's fan base and attract a whole new generation of fans.
Story of the Year - Black Swan
This St. Louis-bred five piece's Epitaph debut is an artistic triumph in every sense. The beloved, million-selling band's third studio album is their finest, building on the strength of past accomplishments. Known for their kinetic live shows and ridiculously catchy songs, Story Of The Year have always been famously ballsy in their mixing of glossy production, big rock hooks, and honeyed melodies with searing metal riffs and intense screaming. The band has garnered a passionate following, thanks in large part to lead singer Dan Marsala's signature vocal style and heartfelt lyrics.
Bum Kon - Drunken Sex Sucks
Bum Kon 'were the band' as Bob Ferbrache put it regarding early punk rock days in Denver. Sounding like teenagers on speed aping Black Flag, how could they not? Bum Kon. Bum Kon recorded two albums and a single in between 1983 and 1986. The single is called 'Drunken Sex Sucks' and was released by Local Anesthetic in 1983. The songs that make up this album are easily the best material the band ever recorded and old punks and young punks alike should go-nuts when they hear this.
New on LP:
Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
