June 3rd New Releases
June 2, 2008
Opeth - Watershed (CD and LP)
New album from the forward-thinking Swedish titans, who seamlessly and fluidly combine Metal, Classic Rock, Prog, Folk and Free Form Jazz. With this, their ninth effort, Opeth continue to shake things up, turn the corner and push the limits of their sound. And the results are breathtaking. Ultimately, Watershed sounds at once completely like and absolutely nothing like previous Opeth records. Watershed takes all that is Opeth, and goes where Opeth have never gone before.
Ladytron - Velocifero
Their latest fully transcends the confines of electro-pop with a fresh wave of distorted soul. Mira and Helen, whose disparate vocal styles already provide considerable depth, have evolved as both musicians and songwriters.
Weezer - Red Album (Deluxe version)
Comprised of sessions produced by Rick Rubin, Jacknife Lee and the band itself, the album is adventurous and undeniable Weezer pop-rock
Fleet Foxes - S/T (CD and LP)
Seattle's Fleet Foxes traffic in baroque harmonic pop. They draw influences from the traditions of folk, pop, choral, gospel, sacred harp singing, West Coast music, traditional music from Ireland to Japan, film scores, and their NW peers. The subject matter ranges from the natural world and familial bonds to bygone loves and stone cold graves. "Supremely crafted and confident" - 8.7 - Pitchfork.
Shearwater - Rook
Austin's Shearwater return with the follow-up to "Palo Santo". "Rook" meditates on man's intersection with the natural world; the world after human beings are gone. A dark fairy tale encased in a cycle of songs. Jonathan Meiburg's bold, soaring voice still anchors the songs, which broaden his pastoral prog-folk chaotic celestial mindfuckery into new realms. Beyond the continuing touchstones of late Talk Talk, Nico, and John Cale, there are now allusions to Van Morrison and hints of Joni Mitchell. All set in a newly lush sonic gorgeousness of harp, strings, and woodwinds atop the magnificent rhythm section.
The Accidental - There Were Wolves
Features Sam Genders of Tunng, Stephen Cracknell of The Memory Band, Hanna Caughlin of The Bicycle Thieves, and Liam Bailey. Their debut is warm, personal, and intimate, and less disguised in its folkiness that either Cracknell or Genders' main projects. Other influences creep in, such as Liam's soul and reggae edge, and Hanna's jazz-influenced vocals. The result is truly collaborative and the presence of four very different voices and songwriters is wholly felt.
Subtle - ExitingARM
Third full length release from Bay Area sextet represents an exciting new chapter in the adventurous pop group's career. The group's malleability has given them the ability to nurture its strengths as musicians and develop into an unstoppable musical force.
