June 10th New Releases
June 9, 2008
Verse - Aggression
In the world of hardcore, bands hardly make it to a third full-length, and rarely is it their most impassioned and urgent. Front man Sean Murphy has spent the last five years screaming his lungs out, but "Aggression" is their most developed and politically pointed release. From the opening chaos of "The New Fury" throughout the six-and-a-half minute epic "Story Of A Free Man," it's clear where Verse stands with songs about the politically oppressed and the current political and social landscape - yet it's done in a timeless way.
Verse will be playing in Traverse City with Have Heart, Tiger, and Tall Ships on June 22nd at the Inside Out Gallery
My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
They enter ambitious territory for the group's 5th full length studio album and it's matched by the most far ranging, surprising, and satisfying sounds of their career. They display the scope and fearlessness that demonstrates their growth into one of the world's great rock n roll bands.
The Banner - Fraility
The Banner, known for horror imagery and dark lyrics and themes, are continuing what they began on their debut "Each Breath Haunted." From the first track, "Welcome Fuckers," "Frailty" immediately lets the listener know that while this is a record unlike any from the band before, it's simply because the band is finally firing on all cylinders. Suicide, regret, failure and loss are hammered into the listener unrelentingly with each track barely allowing a breath of air.
Martha Wainwright - I Know You're Married, But I Have Feelings Too
Her sophomore album is a musically and lyrically ambitious effort, from understated ballads to intense rock numbers. It features guest appearances by Pete Townshend, Donald Fagen and Rufus Wainwright.
Terror - The Damned The Shamed
Fresh off of a tour with Earth Crisis and Sworn Enemy, Terror return to the fray with their first full-length for Century Media, a thirteen-track monster that captures on record this band's ferocious metallic hardcore played at breakneck speed.
Teenage Head with Marky Ramone - S/T
The pairing of legendary rock drummer Marky Ramone and Canada's most legendary punk band is one of those things you dream could happen. It did in the after Markey played in Hamilton, Ontario at a local rock club and became friends with the band.
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
The first moments of Flying Lotus’ "Los Angeles” come on as lush analog waves, just distorted enough to sound like a faded memory of something you once heard on a radio from across a room. Essentially, it’s instant transportation. Whether it’s forward or backward in time, you’ll never know as the sounds of the record leap recklessly into the future while keeping a sly glance back towards the classics of every genre. In this case, establishing a time frame is not nearly as important as establishing the setting…which as the album’s title may have tipped you off, is none other than southern California.
Joan as Police Woman - To Survive
Real Life brought Joan Wasser out of the shadows and established her as that rare thing - a truly unique and original voice. Songwriter, singer and multiinstrumentalist, Joan has bewitched fans across Europe and the US.
The Fratellis - Here We Stand
Like it's predecessor, their latest has a great melodic sense and funny heartfelt lyrics, rounded out with excellent production and ear-grabbing vocals.
Killing the Dream - Fractures
"Fractures" is Killing The Dream's latest full-length effort. Over a year in the making, "Fractures" was engineered by J. Robbins at Magpie Studios (Jawbox, Burning Airlines). Unorthodox heaviness and raw melodies cut and crack the abrasive surface in songs like "Consequence" and "Resolution," while songs like "Holding The Claws" and "Fractures" showcase the band's ongoing creative evolution.
Romans - All Those Wrists
Formed in the winter of 2006, Romans is a four piece hardcore/metal/heavy rock band from Burlington, Vermont. While the chaotic speed of Converge, heavy ambiance of Isis, space-rock of Failure and Cave In and the balls-out rock of Queens Of The Stone Age can be heard, their debut, "All Those Wrists," is more than just a hardcore/metal record. Romans play a style of math-rock without limitations, dabbling in a bit of everything and rolling it into a cohesive ball of all that is heavy.
At the Soundawn - Red Square: We Come in Waves
Italy's best kept secret no more, At the Soundawn play a unique and unfettered style of music that can only be described as beautiful, crushing, and ethereal.
Jean Grae - The Orchestral Files
Jean Grae, one of today’s most critically acclaimed female emcees, offers this 2 disc deluxe edition of rare and unreleased tracks as well as renowned guest appearances recorded during the Orchestral/Babygrande label years. Currently a Blacksmith recording artist,The Orchestral Files: The Deluxe Edition” highlights Jean’s fiery wit and fierce delivery.
Elysia - Lion of Judas
Named for the final resting place of warriors in Roman mythology, the Sacramento, CA based Elysia create epic battle hymns for the death-core set. Self-releasing their debut full-length "Masochist" in 2006, the band did a west coast tour with Killwhitneydead and just completed their first national tour with With Blood Comes Cleansing, Arsonists Get All The Girls and Knights Of The Abyss. Inking a brand new deal with Ferret Music, the band recorded "Lion Of Judas" at God City Studios in Salem, MA with Kurt Ballou (Converge).
